Funding and Grants

The University allocates funds for the specific purpose of supporting higher degree research candidature and project costs. In Human Sciences, funds for the support of your research candidature are distributed by Departments. The distribution allows for the wide variation in costs between candidates' projects. There is no guarantee that any candidate will receive a specified amount of funding. Rather the objective is to ensure that each candidate will receive access to cover reasonable costs essential to the successful and timely completion of their projects.

To apply for funding candidates must submit a completed application form, required supporting documentation and obtain endorsement of their supervisor. Each department has a process and they are outlined within the Faculty HDR Handbook.

For details of what will be funded and for contacts in departments, see the Faculty HDR Handbook in iLearn. University policies apply.

Macquarie University Postgraduate Research Fund

(PGRF)

Macquarie University Higher Degree Research candidates are able to apply for funding from the PGRF once during their candidature. The primary goals of the PGRF are to add value to the research thesis, to provide a means for enhancing their research experience, and to gain firsthand experience of the grant writing process.

Candidates under joint PhD programs, such as the cotutelle scheme, may apply to the Dean HDR for permission to make a second application.  It is expected that all candidates who are eligible will apply for a PGRF grant – see details further below. This should be included in your FCR as part of your overall budget planning.

Up to $5,000 is available for candidates to present at an international conference or for other non-standard research support costs.  Applications for PGRF expenses related to the research project must be supplementary to those covered by Departmental/Faculty postgraduate funding. Applicants are reminded that basic research expenses necessary for the completion of the research project will not be funded from the PGRF scheme.  Host Departments are required to meet the basic research and infrastructure costs incurred by their research candidates
