Support our finalist in the CW Competition

Alisa Roberts with James and Anthony Hanna

Alisa Roberts, a fourth year Education student at Macquarie University is part of a team selected as finalists in the Daily Telegraph Champions of the West Competition. Along with 2 other students from Australian Catholic University Alisa developed a fitness program to be implemented at Merrylands High School.

The program comprises a free and sustainable health and fitness service to the students of Merrylands High School with structured fitness activities (bootcamps, circuits, etc) by qualified and appropriately educated individuals. It will offer an avenue for young people to access services and knowledge to improve their health and fitness through exercise and dietary modifications.

Alisa credits her studies at Macquarie as playing a major role in the project. "Completing my degree at Macquarie University has enabled me to not only develop and implement this program, but also use my knowledge to better cater to the young people I am trying to help. I am incredibly fortunate in that my study has enabled me to better understand the social, emotional and physical aspects of child development, and allowed me to practice these skills in both a theoretical and practical environment" says Alisha.

Alisa's team have been selected as finalists in the Sports category along with 2 other teams.  The winners of each grant category and the Champion of Champions will all be announced at a ceremony on Tuesday 3 June. An additional grant of $10,000 will be awarded to the 'Champion of Champions' winner, encouraging people to get behind their peers who are nominated finalists.

A $10,000 grant is the difference between these students having access to the School Fitness Service or becoming another obesity statistic. Exercise equipment is extremely expensive and difficult to justify purchasing due to the perception that exercise 'is less important than math, English and science'. This equipment would provide a substantial benefit for students and teachers for years to come and would potentially change the entire culture of Merrylands High School.
